Kathleen MacInnes ‘Dean Cadalan Samhach’

This lullaby, written in the 1700’s is perhaps the first Gaelic song to talk explicitly about Native Americans - having been cleared from their lands in the Scottish Highlands, the woman talks of herself as being both oppressor and victim - the line ‘we’re surely like Native Americans’ refers to the fact that the Gaels, themselves forcibly evicted from their homelands, were forced to move into Native areas and work as loggers by the ones who sold them to Canada, thereby extensively contributing to the clearance of Native Americans.
