I found the juxtaposition of cultured Christmas trees with the wild oaks, maples, and firs captivating. If you look at the image on black and large, you can see demons and dragon faces in the wild trees.

This is today’s Google doodle on Google.ie, the Irish portal. It celebrates the work of Ireland’s least well-known literary genius, Flann O’Brien, unheard of outside the wet, alcoholic former colony where I used to live.

Flann O’Brien was decades ahead of his time, publishing books filled with anarchic, genre-defying, hilarious, drug-induced stories about men turning into bicycles; a philosopher scientist who has no idea what the hell he’s talking about; murderers wandering around their own hell, where everything they see and do reflects their own misery; poor students writing a book while you’re reading it; people who keep vocal fairies in their pockets to advise them on poker hands; an entire book written to make fun of Finnegan’s Wake (At Swim-Two-Birds); an entire book in Irish written to make fun of Peig (An Béal Bocht); long-running newspaper columns making fun of Irish culture in general, sometimes written in Irish, sometimes Greek, or Latin, and sometimes in one language using the phonology of another. In fact, his column for the Irish Times was called Cruiskeen Lawn, which is itself an English phonological transliteration of the Irish term for “a full jug” (the implication being that alcohol is involved).

He did all this mostly during the 1930s and 1940s. Let that sink in.

One for the Tolkien (not just Middle-earth) aficionados this, a new release to look forward to next year.

Much as I might personally love to read some more, unreleased writing about Middle-earth its probably fair to say that that particular well has now run dry. However, given that Tolkien’s original conception of Middle-earth was as a mythology for England I’m absolutely fascinated to read The Professor’s take on what is arguably the only major English mythology that has a pre-Norman root.

Got to wait until May 23rd for this one, but as always Amazon pre-orders are already open!

I wonder if it was a conscious decision to put the publication for this as far as possible away from Hobbit movie releases, May 23rd does rather neatly bisect the year between movie releases, doesn’t it?
